Senate Confirms Mukasey as Attorney General After Debate on Torture
The Senate confirmed Michael Mukasey as the 81st attorney general Thursday night by a 53-40 margin. Mukasey attracted the support of independent Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut and six Democrats, despite widespread dissatisfaction in their caucus with his answers to questions about coercive interrogation techniques and executive power.

A divided Senate narrowly confirmed former federal judge Michael B. Mukasey last night as the 81st attorney general, giving the nominee the lowest level of congressional support of any Justice Department leader in the past half-century.
